Market:
The focus of S&D Yachts has changed from general yachting services to one directed towards the superyacht segment of the market. Malta offers several advantages that make it an attractive destination for visiting yachts. Recently S&D Yachts has seen a steady increase in the number of large yachts wintering and refitting locally.
Although the market in 2009 was not as buoyant, this market segment in Malta has not yet been hit as hard as other luxury products during a time of reduced spending. On the other hand, the fact that more yachts are coming to Malta is a great opportunity to cultivate relationships with these customers for better times in the future.
Since the beginning of 2009, several attractive prospects have come on the market and the company’s brokerage service has reported brisk business.
S&D Yachts’ strategy has been to keep a closer eye on operational costs and to concentrate on promotion to be best positioned when the market recovers. New business development is an ongoing part of the business and is especially interesting at the moment when set-up costs are relatively lower. Suppliers are also giving incentive discounts, which the company is selectively taking up.
S&D Yachts is currently the market leader in Malta, offering a host of professional yacht services, including: corporate yacht services; yacht agency services; refit and repair services; yacht chandlery and supplies; and yacht brokerage. S&D Yachts also operate in Tunisia and are represented in the South of France by the well-known and reputable company, Yacht Shopping in Antibes.
The company’s strength is its ability to be dynamic and proactive. The lean company structure allows it to retain good business levels by taking advantage of opportunities as they present themselves.
Achievements:
In anticipation of Malta joining the European Union, S&D Yachts entered a joint venture in Tunisia in 2002 to capitalise on the benefits of operating from a North African location. In 2008, the Tunisia operations became a fully owned subsidiary.
Company chairman Roland Darmanin Kissaun worked to introduce the commercial code for superyachts. In co-operation with the Ministry of Finance, the company gave its input when the 5% VAT pre-EU accession concession was introduced and that was followed up with the introduction of a valid leasing procedure, which is attracting superyachts to come to Malta to avail themselves of this facility.
S&D Yachts has registered a number of superyachts under the Malta flag, notably the Maltese Falcon, the most well known vessel afloat today. As proof of the high level of service offered to its clients, the company receives a large amount of letters and e-mails that act as recommendations to attract new business in a sector where word of mouth is paramount.
History:
Albert Schranz, and the current owner, Roland Darmanin Kissaun, set up S&D Yachts in 1976, over 30 years ago – hence the name S&D. When, the following year, Schranz decided go to Canada, Darmanin Kissaun bought his shares. With a motto of delivering top quality service with a key focus on reliability, the company soon gained an international reputation as Malta’s leading yacht agent, broker and charter management company.
The company’s management has been strengthened with the recruitment of two key members of the team, Peter Fiorini Lowell and Mark Darmanin Kissaun, who subsequently were appointed directors.
Products:
1- Corporate Services:
In the area of corporate yacht services, S&D Yachts register yachts under the Malta flag and pay VAT for them in Malta through the leasing structure. They carry out the 420000 Procedure for superyachts, the importation of superyachts into the EU, and company formation for yacht ownership under the Malta flag.
They also act as tied insurance intermediaries. A list of yachts that have availed of S&D Yachts’ services is shown in Annex I.

S&D Yachts deliver a high quality service with their team of experienced personnel, negotiating the best prices. S&D Yachts makes berthing arrangements, supplies duty free bunkering and lube oils, makes travel arrangements, obtains visas, arranges personalised luxury excursions and transport, and provides all shore support services, including customs formalities.

3- Yacht Repair Services:
S&D Yachts attract large yachts to come to Malta to make use of facilities at the drydocks and the local yacht yards for refits and repairs. It has its own team, including a fully qualified and experienced project manager, mechanics and painters, and subcontracts to local tradesmen to offer a turnkey service. S&D Yachts are the service centre for Vosper stabilizers and also design and construct thermo covers for yachts. S&D Yachts have also patented innovative components used to construct these covers.

S&D Yachts are proud to have been entrusted with the complete make over of the Royal Yacht Pacha 111 depicted hereunder and have received a recommendation from the princess’s captain.

4- Brokerage & Charter:
The Yacht Charter and Brokerage Department specialises in the promotion and selling of new and second-hand yachts. S&D Yachts represents Dufour Yachts in Malta and the same department organises yacht chartering both locally and abroad.

5- Yacht Shop:
In 2007 the company started operating the Yacht Shop within the new Grand Harbour Marina, Vittoriosa, offering a complete chandlery service to yachts. The Yacht Shop represents and stocks top quality yacht products in demand by yachtsmen today including Boat Coat thermo covers, Clin Azur cleaning products, Shurhold, Propspeed, Stoppani paints, Koronakis yacht ropes, Omega brushes, Sidepower thrusters, Liquid Engineering, Condaria air-conditioning systems and Aikona decking.
6- Tunisia Yacht Services:
Since S&D Yachts started operating in Tunisia in 2002, it has seen an encouraging demand for this service from yachts cruising the Western Mediterranean. S&D yachts operate in the ports of Tabarka, Bizerte, Sidi Bou Said and Hammamet offering agency services and bunkering.
Recent Developments:
S&D Yachts has reorganised its entire business to cater for growth along the six separate strategic business units. It is restructuring its head office and increasing office space to enable it to employ more people. It is also adopting a new accounting and management structure to go with the new set-up.
The Yacht Shop operation is being expanded with the opening of a further outlet. The company is actively pursuing new business opportunities, setting up synergies with other local and foreign companies to offer new and improved services and products to visiting superyachts.
Promotion:
Two areas of promotion in which S&D Yachts is active are advertising in international yacht-related publications and participation in the most prestigious trade shows, including Monaco and Genoa. Company directors attend other European fairs, like Paris, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam and London.
S&D Yachts is a member of AYSS (Association of Yacht Support Services), the largest international association of the world top yacht support companies, with company director Mark Darmanin Kissaun being a council member. On the local front they are members of the
